How to Treat Gum Disease Prevention involves professional scaling and root planning to remove the bacteria and tarter from the teeth. Low dose antibiotics and prescription oral rinses will kill any bacterial infection. Frequent cleanings aids in treatment, however, surgery may be required for severe cases.
Tooth Decay Tooth decay begins as a demineralized weak spot that forms when plaque has been left on the tooth. A cavity forms if left untreated.

Fillings & Restorations Repair of old or cracked fillings may be necessary for a variety of reasons. The life of a restoration may last 5 to 15 years, depending upon general wear. Excessive force from hard substances and regular wear can cause a crack or leak in a filling allowing decay underneath.
Some patients may elect to replace old tarnished silver fillings for new tooth colored restorations to improve their overall smile. In severe cases if a tooth is lost, a crown or bridge may be recommended. Cracks and leaks can become chips if not fixed, allowing decay to reenter the tooth.
